# Metric Definitions

> How Monitor360 calculates time, activity, and productivity

## Overview

These definitions apply everywhere metrics appear: the Dashboard, custom dashboard widgets, Reports, Time & Activity, Timelines, Time Sheets, and email reports.

## Time metrics

| Metric | Definition |
| - | - |
| **Total Time** | All time recorded while the tracker was running, including idle time that was kept |
| **Idle Time** | Time with no keyboard or mouse input for longer than the [Idle after](/tracker-settings/idle-timeout) setting. Only kept if [Keep Idle Time](/tracker-settings/keep-idle-time) is on |
| **Active Time** | Total Time minus Idle Time |
| **Check-in** | The start of the first recorded activity of the day |
| **Check-out** | The end of the last recorded activity of the day |
| **Work Period** | From check-in to check-out |

### Example

A user's tracker runs from 9:00 to 17:00 (8 hours). They step away for 45 minutes with idle time kept.

* Total Time = **8h 0m**
* Idle Time = **0h 45m**
* Active Time = **7h 15m**

## What counts as a day

A day runs from the **Day Starts At** time of the user's [shift](/organization/shifts), not always from midnight. With Day Starts At set to `06:00`, work from 22:00 to 03:00 belongs to the day it started on.

On the Dashboard, before your shift's Day Starts At time has passed, "today" also includes yesterday.

## Activity percentage

Activity % measures how much of the active time had keyboard or mouse input.

```
Activity % = seconds with keyboard or mouse input ÷ Active Time × 100
```

* Each second counts once, whether it had one key press or fifty
* Monitor360 counts input. It does not record which keys were pressed
* **Keyboard %** and **Mouse %** use the same formula with only keyboard or only mouse input
* Idle time is excluded, so a long break does not lower Activity %

For example, 7h 15m of active time with input in 5h 48m of it gives 80%.

<Warning>
  Activity % is **not** a productivity score. It shows how much input there was, not whether the work was productive. For that, see [Productivity](#productivity).
</Warning>

<Note>
  Reading, video calls, and meetings often have little input, so 100% is not expected. Compare a user's Activity % over time, or against similar roles, rather than against a fixed target.
</Note>

## Productivity

Every application and website is classified as **Productive**, **Neutral**, or **Un-Productive**.

| Metric | Definition |
| - | - |
| **Productive Time** | Time in applications and websites classified as Productive |
| **Un-Productive Time** | Time in applications and websites classified as Un-Productive |
| **Neutral Time** | Total Time minus Productive and Un-Productive time. This includes unclassified apps and time with no app data |

Classification comes from, in order:

1. [Application](/advanced-settings) or [Website Grouping Rules](/advanced-settings), by priority
2. The application's level on the [Applications](/tracker-settings/applications) page
3. Otherwise, **Neutral**

Browsers are classified by the website (tab title), not by the browser itself. If [Track Apps](/tracker-settings/track-apps) is off, all time counts as Neutral.

## Time sheets

A time sheet entry is one continuous work session on one project and task. Sessions shorter than 5 seconds are ignored. Time tracked in Silent mode has no project or task, and appears as untracked time in project reports.

## Live status

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Logged in** | Has checked in at least once today |
| **Not logged in** | Has not checked in today |
| **Currently active** | Tracker is connected and recording right now |
| **Inactive / offline** | Tracker is not connected or not recording |
